Joseph B. Zimmerman is a distinguished leader in the field of orofacial myology, recognized for his lifelong dedication to advancing speech pathology and the treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders. His legacy is marked by a profound commitment to clinical excellence, ethical practice, and professional education—values that continue to shape the mission of the International Association of Orofacial Myology (IAOM)

Zimmerman’s career included the exclusive treatment of orofacial myofunctional disorders in private practice from 1969 to 2003. He earned both his Bachelor’s and Master’s degrees in speech pathology and has held professional certifications from ASHA (since 1973) and IAOM (since 1975). Notably, he played a key role in supporting the revised ASHA Position Statement on orofacial myology at the 1990 convention in Seattle, aligning with IAOM’s commitment to advancing standards in the field.

His involvement with IAOM is reflected in multiple leadership roles, including Board of Directors, Board of Examiners, Parliamentarian, and editorial contributions to the IAOM Journal, Handbook, and Newsletter. His contributions have extended beyond the association, enriching the broader clinical community through national and international lectures, publications, and hands-on workshops.

Zimmerman’s outstanding service has been honored with numerous awards, including the President’s Award, Golden Gavel Award, and Connie Painter Service Award in IAOM. His enduring impact lies not only in his clinical contributions, but in the spirit of mentorship and excellence he instilled in generations of practitioners.

As IAOM continues to expand its educational offerings, it does so upon the foundation of leaders like Zimmerman—whose vision, integrity, and commitment to lifelong learning remain a guiding light for the profession. Together, his legacy and IAOM’s mission reflect a shared dedication to excellence, collaboration, and continued growth in orofacial myology.
