A 1 day workshop that encompasses core elements of orofacial myofunctional disorders (OMDs), clinical application and the multidisciplinary connection.

COURSE OBJECTIVES

At the completion of this course participants will be able to:

  • Describe the how muscles and structure impact the orofacial/myofunctional complex

  • Explain why facial analysis is important when diagnosing and treating OMDs

  • Demonstrate the process of bolus collection and mastication

  • Identify the phases of a normal swallow

  • Describe what an abnormal swallow would look like and its importance if identifying OMDs

  • State the importance of correct lip and tongue rest postures Identify the etiologies of OMDs

  • Explain why muscular TMDs, parafunctional habits, and non-nutritive sucking are signs or symptoms of OMDs

  • Describe how malocclusions and orthodontic appliances affect functional performance

  • Explain how correcting OMDs can improve structure, function, and health Describe the science and research for myofunctional therapy

  • Discuss the multidisciplinary connection between airway, dental, speech, and orofacial myofunctional disorder

  • Implement a plan for referral and patient education
